California artist Jo Lathwood (1938-1973). Jo Lathwood was Mary Cassatt’s niece. Jo Lathwood established a custom boutique at Malibu Beach in 1938. She gained fame as a designer of the first bikinis and other sportswear for Saks, Neiman Marcus, and members of the film colony. An inveterate traveler, she made trips each year to the South Pacific where she painted many watercolors of the native people and their activities. She died in Santa Monica on August 20, 1987.
